The purpose of the Observatory is to generate, accumulate and disseminate information about advances in the digital transformation of the Spanish financial system. So far, very little, disperse information has been available, giving the Observatory considerable potential added value.
The Bank Digitalisation Observatory aims to be the main computerised, analytical reference in Spain on matters in connection with disruptive technology in the banking and payment methods sector. There are few comparable computerised references in Europe.
The Observatory is developed jointly by Funcas and KPMG, at the initiative and under the management of the former.
The Observatory has two main components:
The first is a regular user survey that measures the penetration of new technologies in different areas, among other aspects.
The second component is an analysis of the level of digital maturity of the Spanish financial sector. The objective is to evaluate advances in digitalisation in Spanish banks based on information provided by the institutions themselves. This evaluation will be made by consultants KPMG, based on a survey and interviews with the banks, in collaboration with Funcas.
In addition, a database will be built containing all public information available, including data, all types of publications and regulatory changes. The Observatory will compile:
- Industry initiatives in the digital and fintech area: presented newsletter-style, with a news library available on a specific webpage on the Funcas domain.
- Systematisation of digital activity indicators (e.g. Digitalised uses of the National Statistics Institute (INE); AFI-Technocom report, ...) From anecdotal and sporadic information provided by financial institutions, indicators will be prepared based on reliable information from which to draw conclusions about the sector as a whole.
- News about industry and regulatory initiatives on fintech matters and digitization of payment methods. These will be classified systematically to create a specific database containing sector news of considerable importance.
In addition to this, the observatory will publish regular analyses by its own experts and guest contributors, including both blogs and vlogs.
