Este trabajo pretende revisar el papel que ha jugado la oferta de energía en el desarrollo económico de la España contemporánea. Las escasas dotaciones de recursos naturales de carácter energético y la intervención del Estado son los dos factores que han determinado la evolución del sector. En general, el desarrollo económico español ha tenido que hacer frente a unos costes de la energía superiores a los de otros países. Durante el siglo XIX, este hecho ha marcado la dirección y la intensidad de la industrialización. La intervención del Estado, por su parte, ha sido casi siempre ineficaz o contraproducente. Desde el final de la Guerra Civil, éste es el factor al que cabe achacar las graves limitaciones que la oferta de energía ha impuesto al desarrollo de la economía española.

This paper reviews the role played by energy supply in the economic development of Spain today. The scarcity of natural energy resources and government intervention are the two factors which have determined the development of the sector.In general, economic development in Spain has had to stand higher energy costs than other countries. Over the XIX century this fact has set the direction and theintensity of the industrialization. On the other handgovernment intervention has, most times, been inefficient and self-defeating. Since the end of the Civil War this has become the main factor to which attribute the serious limitations that energy supply has imposed over the development of the Spanish economy.
