Spanish imports have evolved unevenly during the recent economic growth and crisis. A possible reason is the substantial increase of regulations concerning certain economic activities. This paper quantifies the incidence of Technical Barriers to Trade (TBTs) and of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPSs) and uses the structural gravity equation
to analyse their impact on market access. TBTs slow down aggregate imports; in some activities they restrict market access while in others they facilitate it, and they mostly affect European Union imports.
