Tren y puerto: complementariedad en el sistema de transportes. Una nota sobre el caso español

Este artículo evalúa la importancia del transporte ferroviario en el sistema portuario, en general, y en el sistema portuario español, en particular. La relación es mutua, y a través de los puertos, el ferrocarril puede aumentar la cuota de mercado que parece anclada en niveles mínimos en el reparto modal. El artículo intenta aproximar algunos elementos que permiten cuantificar este potencial y analiza el cambio de estrategias que deben llevarse a cabo para conseguir un aumento significativo de la actividad ferroportuaria. El tráfico ferroviario asociado a los puertos podría multiplicarse por tres en los próximos años si cuenta con los desarrollos de infraestructuras necesarios. El reto es grande pero parece ser la fuente principal de crecimiento del transporte ferroviario en España, ya que el puerto aporta el 45 por 100 de las mercancías transportadas por ferrocarril y, a su vez, el ferrocarril supone el principal motor para el crecimiento del puerto.

This article evaluates the importance of rail in the port system, especially in the Spanish port system. The relationship is mutual, and through the ports, the railroad can increase market share seems anchored at low levels in the modal split. The paper quantifies and analyzes this potential and the change over strategies to be undertaken to achieve this goal. Rail freight traffic associated with the ports could be multiplied by three in the coming years if it has the necessary infrastructure developments. The challenge is great but seems to be the main source of growth for Spanish’s freight rail transport since the port accounts for 45% of goods transported by rail and in turn the railway is the main pillar for freight growth of the port.
