Nuevas evidencias sobre la productividad de los servicios

Uno de los aspectos más controvertidos durante los últimos años en la economía española ha sido el debate sobre nuestra productividad. Por otra parte, tanto el papel cuantitativo y estratégico de los servicios en las economías modernas como las teorías convencionales sobre la baja productividad del sector han hecho que una de las razones explicativas del pobre comportamiento de la productividad en España haya sido, precisamente, el papel del sector servicios. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo presentar las últimas evidencias sobre la situación y la evolución de la productividad laboral en el sector servicios de la economía española, aunque relacionándolas con lo observado en la Unión Europea y Estados Unidos. Originalmente, se desagrega y profundiza en los patrones productivos de las distintas ramas terciarias. El análisis se basa en los datos ofrecidos por la base de datos EU KLEMS para el período 1980-2005.

One of the most outstanding debates in recent years has been the productivity issues in the Spanish economy. On the other hand, the growing role of services sector, both in quantitative and strategic terms, and the conventional thesis on the stagnancy of this sector have led to some economists to argue that the role of services might help to explain the poor behaviour of the Sapnish productivity. This work aims to present new evidentes on the real situation and recent evolution of the labour productivity in the services sector for the Spanish economy, although relating them with those observed for the EU and the United States. Originally, the paper deeps into the different productive patterns of the heterogeneous tertiary branches. The analisis is based on the EU KLEMS database for the period 1980-2005.
