This article describes the current health care context, stressing that, with population aging and the very plausible increase in healthcare spending, the big question for our economies is not as much about whether this increase in spending is sustainable, but whether our limited resources are being used in the best possible way. The paper aims to show that the best hope for our healthcare systems is to implement the Triple Aim of better health and better care at lower cost. The authors describe how this is possible by: looking to other country experiences; understanding what works and why; measuring results in health care; promoting value-based health care; utilizing technology; redesigning payment systems; and changing the overall culture of health.
