The most notable aspect of the educational history of Sweden is that the population was literate long before the introduction of compulsory schooling in the 19th century. The number of students increased in the first half of the 20th century and the educational system has maintained high standards of quality. Around 1968 we may observe a reorientation towards quantity and equality. There was a transition from a «state of education and right» to a «social state». The introduction of the comprehensive school in 1969 marked the beginning of a period of reforms to promote the integrated education of students and equality in al¡ its aspects. Ever since then we have witnessed a search for maximum equality between students, a drop in the leve¡ of knowledge, and an increase in violence in the schools. There has been a grovving public reaction recently and the present minister of school education is preparing ambitious reforms.
