Como parte del número monográfico dedicado al sistema bancario, el presente artículo trata específicamente del negocio bancario minorista. Tras un análisis de cuál ha sido el proceso de reestructuración en el subsector de cajas de ahorros, sin duda el más genuino representante de negocio minorista en España, el artículo se centra en cómo éste se va a ver afectado por la crisis, y en identificar los retos y las transformaciones que las entidades deberán acometer para garantizar su sostenibilidad en un entorno extremadamente adverso, y en el que el exceso de capacidad va a manifestarse con una gran intensidad.

As part of the special issue dedicated to the banking system, this article deals specifically with the retail banking business. Following an analysis of the restructuring process in the savings banks subsector —undoubtedly the most genuine representative of retail business in Spain— the article focuses on how the former will be affected by the crisis, and it identifies the challenges and transformations that institutions should undertake to ensure their sustainability in an extremely adverse environment, in which excess capacity will demonstrate with great intensity.
