En este artículo, se examinan las características del sistema español de protección por desempleo. Tras un breve repaso de la evolución y situación normativa, se analizan el grado de cobertura del sistema, en sus dos vertientes de población cubierta e intensidad monetaria de la protección, para examinar después algunas de las características más relevantes de los perceptores de prestaciones, especialmente desde el punto de vista de su relación con la actividad económica y su situación familiar. El artículo se cierra con un repaso de los principales estudios existentes en lo que se refiere a la incidencia de las prestaciones por desempleo en la salida del paro.

This paper examines the characteristics of the Spanish unemployment protection system.After a brief review of the evolution and its regulatory situation, the degree of coverage of the system isanalysed, in both its aspects of covered population and monetary intensity of the protection. It then goes on to examine some of the most relevant characteristics oif the recipients of benefits, specially from the point of view of their relationship to the economic activity and their family situation. This paper concludeswith a review of the main existing studies on the effect of unemployment benefits on the exit from unemployment.
