Dimensión bancaria en la UEM

La consolidación del sistema bancario es un proceso irregular y que no es reciente, cuyo resultado es una mayor dimensión bancaria. El presente artículo revisa, en primer lugar, la posición ocupada dentro de los mercados por los distintos agentes financieros en cuanto a su especialización, competencia y eficiencia. A continuación, y ya dentro del nuevo entorno, se muestra cómo han modificado el panorama bancario cambios operativos como los derivados de los avances en la tecnologíay el manejo de la información, la apertura de nuevos canales de distribución y el replanteamiento de los yaexistentes, junto con los de tipo estructural centrados en la difuminación de la frontera entre el modelo alemán de banca universal y el anglosajón, así como en el desarrollo de las relaciones banca-seguros. Por último, se muestra cómo el deseo de obtener bancos "campeones nacionales" ha promovido una importante oleada defusiones, si bien las llevadas a cabo con éxito han sido escasas.--------------------------------------------------Consolidation of the banking system is not a consistent or a recent process, the result of which is increased banking size. In the first place, thisarticle reviews the position occupied in the markets by the different financial agents as regards specialization, competition and efficiency. We then show, within the context of the new environment, how the banking scene has been modified by such operating changes as those stemming from advances in technology and information handling, the opening of new distribution channels, and the reshaping of existing ones, along with thoseof a structural type focused on the blurring of the dividing line between the German model of universal banking and the Anglo-Saxon one, as well as on the development of banking-insurance relations. Lastly, we show how the desire to obtain "national champion" banks hasled to a significant wave of mergers, even though those brought to a successful conclusion have been few and far between.
