Human capital is oneof the most important sources of growth, in spite of which there is still not a model that includes in an explicit and conclusive way the contribution of human capital to development. Economic history can supply with the necessary information to repose the problem and to advance new hypothesis. Human beings have invested in education in accordance to the benefits they expected to obtain from it. As externalities are not accounted for, this investment has in some cases been lower than that required for economic development. The case of Spain proves that is undervalued, for example, the contribution of education towards modernization of the agriculture sector and the importance of women's education.
