In an increasingly globalized world, a deep knowledge of the tourism competitiveness of a country is essential for policy makers and practitioners in the process of making responsible decisions. And this is especially true in the case of Spain where, according to data from 2014, the tourism sector generated 10.9 por 100 of GDP and 12.7 por 100 of employment. Based on the rate of Competitiveness of Tourism and Travel (TTCI, 2015) prepared by the World Economic Forum and according to which Spain holds the first position, we analyse the competitive strengths and weaknesses of the country. On the other hand, to help local authorities in their process of decision making, we developed a synthetic index of tourism competitiveness of the regions that identifies, in this order, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Madrid as the most competitive in the tourism sector in 2015.
