This paper introduces key long-term trends in seaborne trade and the shipping industry. Building upon the analysis of more than 40 years of UNCTAD’s Review of Maritime Transport, it discusses the evolving geography of trade, including the increased participation of developing countries in globalized production processes. Between 1970 and 2010, developing countries’ share in the volume of seaborne imports went up from just 18 to 56 per cent of the world’s total. Emerging economies also increasingly participate in the provision of shipping services, the operation of seaports, and the construction and demolition of ships. Today, the globalization of maritime businesses allows shipping companies to source from the most cost effective suppliers. It has thus led to the reduction of international transport costs, which benefits global merchandize trade. Still, problems and challenges persist. The paper highlights the continued cyclical nature of the shipping business, and the emerging challenges related to climate change.
