In this article we analyze the negative side effects on bank profitability which have had the expansionary monetary policies in Europe. The withdrawal of economic stimuli will have a positive but heterogeneous effect on the national banking systems, and Spain must be one of the countries whose banks will improve largely their profitability. After having withdrawn the stimuli it is not likely to return to a precrisis scenario, since the ECB will continue to intermediate interbank flows, it has experimented with monetary policy tools with important implications in profitability and at the same time profound transformations such as regulation and digital banking will take place.
