The study discusses what ca be the main sources of competitive advantages of thesmal and medium-sized companies and, specifically, the role carried out by one of the most significant characteristics of these companies: the flexibility which their structure give to them. It is also necessary to add the possibility of counting on a concentrated property, which would resolve the problems derived from the conflict of interests between stock-holders and managers. However, between the small and medium-sized companies, we find very different types of owners (family-owner companies, those belonging to groups, of a smallbusiness nature, to cite just a few cases), which oblige us to study the foreseeable effects which this canhave on the strategies which they must follow in the end. The work concludes with a descriptive analysis ofthe behavior of the small and medium-sized spanish companies which confirms the existence of differential behaviors in regard to the major companies and between the different categories shich are established therein.
