The paper has two main objectives. The first is to analyze and update the contribution of tourism to the recent development of the Spanish economy, particularly on GDP, employment and the balance of payments. And, the second, to study the contribution of tourism to the balance of services and how this has make up the deficits due to the Spanish commercial interchanges. This last permit also to compare the trends of growth shown by the touristic and non-touristic services, which have experienced a high increase along the last years. The analysis takes as a reference the period 2000-2017 and practically all statistical data come from the official series of the Bank of Spain and the Institute of National Statistics. The paper underlines the very positive role played by tourism as a key factor of the Spanish recovery after the recent economic crisis. A section on the perspectives of tourism evolution and the final remarks suggest a rather positive mediumterm panorama, but it is also underlined the need to pay attention to the new trends and demands of the so-called ‘tourism of the XXIst. century’ and the importance of improving the policy co-operation between the Autonomous Communities (regions) and the Central Administration.
